Google Summer Of Code for the Year 2021 has been announced and applications are open for organizations. In this article I will be covering the changes that has been made in the guidelines of Google Summer Of Code. So lets get started !

1. Reduction of Working Hours 🔥

Google summer of code used to have official time commitment of 300+ hours which means approximately 30 to 40 hours per week but for the year 2021, GSoC has strictly announced a time-limit of 175 hours over a 10-week coding period . This reduction in time means projects have to be smaller. This has been done due to the fact that many students resist to participate in open source programs because of the mentality that it may affect their studies in bad way. So, Google reduced the time-limit to promote Open-Source even more.

You can see the detailed timeline here:

2. Reduction in Number Of Evaluations

Selected Students were supposed to pass three evaluations but for the year 2021 due to reduction in time. Now mentees only have to pass two evaluations for successful completion of Google Summer Of Code.

3. Reduction in Stipend

Due to the fact that time duration is reduced to half ( from 300+ hours to 175 hours ) , stipend is also reduced to half. This means that stipend amount is reduced from 3000$ to 1500$ for Indian students.

Don’t participate in Google summer of code just for the sake of stipend. Even if you don’t get selected in it, don’t get disheartened. Just keep contributing to the open source.

All the best if you are going to participate in Google summer of code this year.
